The anticipated 2017 MX-5 Roadster Coupe name is on track for debut this month, if an official invitation for the New York motor show is anything to go by.
The option of a folding hardtop was last seen in the now retired NC MX-5 range, with the all-new ND model currently available only in ragtop form.
But, as Mazda’s cheekily worded invitation suggests, the new MX-5’s expected “lid” is right around the corner.
For its part, the Japanese car maker has so far offered nothing more than this invitation, but as MX-5 program manager Nobuhiro Yamamoto told CarAdvice in 2015, a hard-top option has always been in the plan.
“Of course, we understand that many MX-5 customers will still want a folding metal hardtop for reasons such as bad weather and for extra security, so we do intend to offer this feature in the future. But at this stage I can’t say when,” he said.
Details for the new hard-top version of the MX-5 likely won’t be released until the New York motor show opens to the press on March 23, but fans might at least expect the option to add less than the old model’s 39-kilogram impost.
The new roof will likely also be a more compact unit than before, allowing for improved boot space.
