Seriously though, I have decided to nominate for the leadership of The Nationals federal parliamentary party for several reasons.
I’m not going to tip a bucket on current leader Barnaby Joyce - that was old politics and it was completely rejected on the weekend.
I think Australians want a calmer, moderate and more respectful political debate which is focused on policies, and not personalities.
After each election, it’s a natural transition point for the party and leadership roles are declared vacant. It’s healthy for the democratic process that all Members and Senators who are interested in a senior role, put their hands up and we have a choice to make.
For The Nationals to connect better with younger and female voters in the future, we need to recognise the diversity of views in our regional areas and I believe I can do that… but there hasn’t been a Victorian leader of the Federal team in 50 years so don’t bet on me to win!
